Velen van jullie weten inmiddels dat ons leven op z’n kop staat. Hier de stand van zaken tot nu toe en de samenvatting van wat er de afgelopen twee dagen gebeurd is. We proberen dit hier nuchter en feitelijk op een rijtje te zetten, tegelijk zijn we enorm verdrietig. Ons leven is ernstig ontregeld en we kunnen veel dingen nog niet overzien.

Wat is er gebeurd?

Vroeg op maandagmorgen 29 december kreeg Eline bij het wakker worden een epileptische aanval. De ambulance was er snel bij en nam haar mee naar het VUmc. Michiel volgde haar al snel nadat een buurvrouw de kinderen onder haar hoede nam, deze zorg werd later op de dag overgenomen door vrienden. In het ziekenhuis kreeg Eline nog een epileptische aanval. Dezelfde dag is er een hersenscan gemaakt (MRI) waarvan aan het eind van de middag de uitslag met ons werd besproken.

De diagnose

Eline blijkt een hersentumor te hebben. Het is een vrij grote tumor in de rechter hersenhelft (fronto-temporaal en insulair) die mogelijk al een jaar of langer aanwezig is en nu dus aanleiding gaf tot de epileptische aanvallen. Op grond van het MRI-beeld lijkt het te gaan om een tumor die in de hersenen zelf is ontstaan en dus niet een uitzaaiing van een tumor elders in het lichaam. De tumor is niet goed afgegrensd en groeit het omringende weefsel in. In die zin is het een kwaadaardige tumor (waarschijnlijk een oligodendroglioom, maar dat is pas zeker na onderzoek van het weefsel). Het uitdrukkelijke advies van de neuroloog is om de tumor te laten opereren. Daarbij wordt zoveel mogelijk van het slechte weefsel verwijderd maar de hele tumor kan niet verwijderd worden, omdat hij ook groeit in hersendelen die niet verwijderd kunnen worden. Na de operatie wordt het weefsel verder onderzocht en dan wordt pas duidelijk welke soort tumor het precies is. Dan kan er ook pas besloten worden welke behandelingen er na de operatie nodig en mogelijk zijn.

Epilepsie

Om de kans op een volgende epileptische aanval zo klein mogelijk te houden is begonnen met een medicijn tegen epilepsie, Eline zal dat moeten blijven slikken. Zeker in het begin is het belangrijk dat er wel rekening gehouden wordt met het optreden van een nieuwe epileptische aanval. Dit betekent bijvoorbeeld dat Eline nu geen auto mag rijden. Ook bepaalde handelingen mag ze uit voorzorg voorlopig slechts doen als er een andere volwassene in de buurt is (bijvoorbeeld het in bad doen van Josefien). Vanwege de medicijnen is de borstvoeding gestopt.

Hulp nodig

Velen van jullie boden jullie hulp aan. Dat zal ook hard nodig zijn de komende tijd vanwege de epilepsie waar we rekening mee moeten gaan houden, maar ook vanwege het hele medische traject dat nu wordt gestart. Met drie kinderen tussen de 2 maanden en 3 ½ jaar is er genoeg te doen. Michiel denkt nog na over een praktische manier om jullie hulp in te plannen.

Gebed

Velen van jullie hebben laten merken dat jullie voor ons bidden. Ook dat stellen we enorm op prijs en het blijft zeker nodig. Bid vooral om wijsheid voor het medische team, en ook voor ons, dat we in dit alles Gods nabijheid ervaren, van dag tot dag, te midden van alle verwarring en onzekerheid.

Het is voor ons binnengekomen als een donderslag bij heldere hemel. We zijn geschokt, verward, verdrietig en beseffen nog maar amper wat dit allemaal betekent. Tegelijk ervaren we dat God onze rots is waarop we (juist nu ook) mogen bouwen. Psalm 23 (De Heer is onze Herder) geeft troost en we ervaren dat Jezus naast ons wandelt en ons draagt temidden van de schok die dit nieuws teweegbrengt.

31 december naar huis

Vandaag (dinsdag 30 december) mocht Eline van de neuroloog eigenlijk al naar huis, maar omdat ze zich nog erg slap en moe voelt, slaapt ze nog een nacht in het ziekenhuis. Morgen komt ze in principe thuis.

We waarderen jullie meeleven, reacties en hulpaanbod enorm! Bellen is even niet zo handig op dit moment, alle andere vormen van communicatie zijn prima.

Update 1 – Eline has a brain tumor

Many of you know by now that our lives are upside down. Here you will read about what the situation is at the moment and what happened in the past two days. We are trying to list this in a factual way, but we are very, very sad. Our life is completely upside down and there are so many things that we cannot oversee.

What happened?

On early Monday morning 29 December Eline had an epileptic attack whilst waking up. An ambulance arrived quickly and took her to the VU-hospital. Michiel followed her shortly after a neighbour took care of the children, who were later handed over to friends. In the hospital Eline had another epileptic attack. The same day a brain scan (MRI) was made and late afternoon the results were discussed with us.

The diagnosis

Eline appears to have a brain tumor. It is a rather large tumor in the right half of the brain (fronto-temporal and insular) which may have been there for possibly a year or longer and now resulted in epileptic attacks. According to the MRI-scan it seems to be a tumor which arose in the actual brain and hence not the result of a tumor somewhere else in the body. The tumor is not well enclosed and is growing into the surrounding tissue. In that sense it is a malignant tumor (most likely an oligodendroglioma, but this can only be confirmed after tissue has been examined). The neurologist explicitly advised to operate the tumor. This means that as much of the bad tissue will be removed as possible, however, the tumor cannot be removed entirely, because it is also growing in parts of the brain that cannot be removed. After the operation the tissue will be further examined and only then will it become clear what type of tumor it is exactly. It is only then that decisions can be made on what further treatments will be necessary and possible.

Epilepsy

To reduce the chances of another epileptic attack to a minimum, Eline has started taking medication which she will have to keep taking. Especially in this first phase we must keep into account the possibility of a new epileptic attack. This means that for the time being Eline is not allowed to drive. Furthermore there are a number of things that she can only do in the presence of another adult (for instance bathing Josefien). Due to the medication Eline has stopped breastfeeding.

Help needed

Many of you have offered help. We will really need help the coming time due to the epilepsy which we have to keep into account, but also due to the medical process that is now starting. There is plenty to do with three children between the ages of 2 months and 3.5 years. Michiel is thinking about a practical way on how to organise your help.

Prayer

Many of you have shown that you are praying for us. We very much appreciate this and it will remain necessary. Please pray for wisdom for the medical team, as well as for us, that we may experience God’s presence, every day, in the midst of all this confusion and uncertainty.

This news has struck us like lightning. We are shocked, confused, sad and hardly realise what it means. At the same time we experience that God is our rock on which (especially now) we can build. Psalm 23 (The Lord is our Shepherd) comforts us and we experience that Jesus is walking next to us and carrying us in the midst of everything that is going on.

Going home on 31 December

Today (Tuesday 30 December) the neurologist incidated that Eline was allowed to go home, but as she still feels very weak and tired, she will stay at the hospital one more night. She will be coming home tomorrow.
